Choosing the Right Garage Door Material

Material affects more than looks — it determines how your door handles Texas summers, how much upkeep it needs, and how long it lasts. Here’s an honest breakdown of each option.

Steel

The go-to choice for most DFW homeowners. Steel doors are tough, low-maintenance, and available in dozens of styles and colors. Modern steel doors come in single, double, and triple-layer construction — thicker layers mean better insulation (up to R-18) and better dent resistance. Steel holds paint well and resists warping in the Texas heat.

Best for: Most homes. Best overall value for durability, insulation, and long-term maintenance cost.

Wood Composite

Wood composite doors give you the warmth and character of real wood without the maintenance headache. Real wood expands, warps, and needs repainting every few years. Composite eliminates all of that while keeping the look, typically using real wood veneers over a steel or engineered core — authentic appearance with modern durability.

Best for: Traditional and craftsman homes where curb appeal and an authentic wood character matter most.

Aluminum & Glass

Aluminum frames with tempered glass panels are the signature choice for contemporary and modern home designs. Full-view glass doors flood the garage with natural light and make an architectural statement. Clear, frosted, or tinted glass options are available. Aluminum doesn’t rust, making it a solid low-maintenance option in DFW’s climate.

Best for: Contemporary and new-construction homes that prioritize design, clean lines, and natural light.

Is It Time for a New Garage Door?

Sometimes repairing the old door no longer makes financial sense. Here are signs it’s time to invest in a replacement:

As a general rule: if a repair costs more than 50% of the price of a new door, replacement almost always makes more financial sense. A new door also comes with a warranty, modern insulation, and updated hardware — none of which you get when patching an old door another time.

There’s also curb appeal to consider. Your garage door takes up roughly a third of your home’s front face. According to Remodeling Magazine’s annual Cost vs. Value report, a new garage door consistently delivers one of the highest returns on investment of any home improvement project — right around 85% nationally. Here’s when we’d tell you it’s time:

Severe Dents or Structural Damage

Major damage from vehicle impact or storm debris that affects the door's alignment and insulation can make replacement more cost-effective than repair.

Poor Insulation or Drafts

Old, single-layer doors let in Texas heat and cold. A modern insulated door can noticeably reduce energy bills.

Door Is Loud or Rough

Older doors on worn tracks become noisy and rough. A new door with modern hardware operates quietly and smoothly.

Door Looks Outdated

Your garage door is about 30% of your home's front face. An outdated door can hurt curb appeal and resale value.

Constant Repairs Needed

If you're calling for repairs every year or two, the cumulative cost often exceeds a full replacement – which comes with a warranty.

What Happens on Your Installation Day

Most people have never had a garage door installed and aren’t sure what to expect. Here’s exactly what the day looks like — start to finish.

We arrive on time: We give you a clear window — not a vague four-hour block. Our crew shows up with the new door, all hardware, springs, cables, tracks, and weatherstripping already loaded. We start by disconnecting and removing your old door first. Most old doors are out in under an hour.

The installation: New door sections go in starting from the bottom and working up. Tracks are installed and aligned, springs and cables are set to your door’s exact weight, and all hardware is torqued and tested. The opener is connected and programmed. New weatherstripping goes on the bottom and sides. We clean up the work area before calling it done.

The walk-through: Once installed, we run the door through multiple full cycles and check the balance point. We show you how to operate the door manually (critical to know if power goes out), walk you through the opener’s safety reverse feature, and help you program remotes or a keypad. We don’t leave until you’re comfortable with everything.

Total time: Most single-car doors are done in 4–6 hours. Double-car doors typically run 5–7 hours. We haul away the old door and all packaging — your driveway is clean when we leave.
