Resetting a garage door opener clears its memory and settings — handy after a power outage, when you move in, or when remotes start misbehaving. Here's how to reset and reprogram most openers, plus how to do a full factory reset on a smart unit.
Start with the gentlest fix and only escalate if you need to — a simple power cycle solves a lot.
Unplug the opener at the ceiling outlet, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in. This clears many glitches and frozen smart features without erasing your remotes — always try it first.
To clear remotes (after a move or a lost remote), press and hold the learn button on the motor unit about 6 seconds until the LED turns off. This wipes all remotes and keypads from memory.
Press the learn button, then press each remote or enter your keypad PIN within 30 seconds to re-add the ones you're keeping. See our opener-programming guide for the exact steps.
If the door won't open or close all the way, or reverses before it hits the floor, the up/down travel limits need resetting. Adjust the limit dials or buttons on the unit per your model.
For myQ or Aladdin Connect units, remove the opener from the app first, do the memory reset, then re-add it in the app so the Wi-Fi and notifications work again.
If a full reset doesn't stop erratic behavior — random opening, no response, or grinding — the logic board or a sensor may be failing. We diagnose it quickly; call (940) 644-4376.
Usually you don't need to — most openers keep their settings. If it's acting up, unplug it for 30 seconds and plug it back in. Smart units may need to reconnect to Wi-Fi in the app.
A simple power cycle won't. Holding the learn button to clear the memory will erase all remotes and keypads — you'll then re-program the ones you keep.
Use the travel-limit dials or buttons on the motor unit to set how far the door travels up and down. The exact method varies by brand and model; we can set them precisely if the door won't seat or keeps reversing.
Reset first — it's free and fixes many quirks. If resetting doesn't hold and the unit is old, noisy, or the board is failing, we'll show you the cost of a quiet new opener so you can compare.
If your opener still acts up after a reset, the board or a sensor may be failing. Same-day diagnosis, free estimate.
