Garage Door Won't Open With the Remote

If your garage door won't open with the remote but the wall button still works, the problem is almost always the remote itself — a dead battery, lost programming, the lock button, or interference. Here's how to fix a garage door remote that won't work.

Fix Your Remote in 6 Checks

If the wall button works, the opener is fine — focus on the remote and its signal.

1

Test the Wall Button First

If the wall button opens the door but the remote doesn't, the opener and door are fine — the issue is the remote or its signal. (If the wall button also fails, it's the opener.)

2

Replace the Remote Battery

The most common fix. Pop in a fresh coin-cell or AA/AAA and try again, especially if the range has been shrinking or it works only up close.

3

Reprogram the Remote

A power surge or a full opener memory can drop the remote's code. Re-pair it with the learn button on the motor unit (see our opener-programming guide).

4

Check the Lock / Vacation Button

The wall console's 'lock' button disables all remotes while still letting the wall button work — an easy thing to bump on by accident. Toggle it off.

5

Check the Opener's Antenna

The thin wire hanging from the motor unit is the antenna. If it's curled up, broken, or tucked away, the remote's range drops — let it hang straight down.

6

Rule Out Interference

Nearby LED or CFL bulbs, a new electronic device, or a neighbor's system can jam the signal. Try a different bulb in the opener and test. If it still won't pair, call us — (940) 644-4376.

Troubleshooting FAQ

My garage remote stopped working but the wall button still works — why?

Because the opener is fine and the problem is the remote or its signal: a dead battery, lost programming, the lock button, or interference. Start with a new battery, then reprogram.

Why does my garage door remote only work up close?

Short range is usually a weak remote battery or a curled-up/damaged opener antenna. Replace the battery and make sure the antenna wire hangs straight down from the motor unit.

Why did my garage door remote stop working suddenly?

A power surge can wipe the programming, the battery can die, or the wall lock button got bumped on. Re-program the remote, replace the battery, and check the lock button.

Can LED bulbs stop my garage door remote from working?

Yes — some LED and CFL bulbs emit radio interference that jams the remote's signal. Swap in a different (ideally LED bulbs rated for garage-door openers) or incandescent bulb and test.
