Programming a garage door opener — a remote, a keypad, or your car's built-in buttons — comes down to the 'learn' button on the motor unit. Here's how to program most major brands (LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Craftsman) in a couple of minutes.
Almost every opener uses the same idea: press 'learn,' then press what you want to pair within 30 seconds. Here's each version.
It's on the back or side of the motor unit on the ceiling (you may need a ladder). Look for a small colored square — purple, yellow, orange, red, or green — next to an LED light. The color tells you which system you have.
Press and release the learn button; the LED lights up. Within 30 seconds, press the remote button you want to use. The opener lights blink or the unit clicks to confirm it learned the remote.
Press the learn button, then go to the keypad, enter the 4-digit PIN you want, and press Enter (or the up/down button). The opener confirms, and you can test the code right away.
Hold your car's HomeLink button and the remote together until the car's light flashes rapidly, then press the opener's learn button and tap the car button again. Newer Security+ 2.0 units need this extra learn-button step.
If you lost a remote, hold the learn button about 6 seconds until the LED goes out — that wipes every remote and keypad. Then re-program just the ones you still have.
Genie calls its system Intellicode; LiftMaster uses Security+ 2.0 — the steps match but the button color and timing differ. If you can't find the learn button or it won't take the code, we'll sort it — see our brand pages below.
On the motor unit mounted to the ceiling — usually the back or side, near the hanging antenna wire and the LED. It's a colored square button. You'll likely need a step stool to reach it.
Common reasons: you didn't press the remote within 30 seconds of the learn button, the remote battery is dead, or the opener's memory is full. Erase the memory and re-program, and replace the battery if needed.
Set the universal remote to your brand (per its instructions), then use the same learn-button steps: press learn on the opener, then the universal remote button within 30 seconds. We can pair one for you if it's fighting you.
Clear the HomeLink buttons, pair the button to your existing remote, then press the opener's learn button and tap the car button again to finish. The exact steps vary by car and opener year.
If the learn button won't cooperate or your opener's memory is acting up, we'll program every remote and keypad fast. Free estimate.
