Why Won't My Garage Door Close?

If your garage door won't close, the safety sensors are the cause about nine times out of ten — but a blocked track, a wrong limit setting, or the wall lock button can do it too. Here's how to find out why your garage door won't close and fix it.

Why Your Door Won't Close — in Order

Work down this list; the first few fix the vast majority of won't-close problems.

1

Check the Safety Sensors

If the opener light blinks when you try to close, the sensors are misaligned, dirty, or blocked. Clean the lenses, clear the path, and tilt them until both LEDs glow solid — this is the #1 cause.

2

Clear the Track and Path

A bin, a bike, or debris in the door's path (or in the tracks) will stop it. Make sure nothing is blocking the door or the beam between the two sensors near the floor.

3

Check the Wall Lock / Vacation Button

Many wall consoles have a 'lock' or vacation button that disables the remotes and can stop the door. Press it to toggle it off and try again.

4

Reset the Close Limit

If the door starts down then reverses before reaching the floor, the opener thinks it hit something. The down-travel limit needs adjusting on the motor unit so it knows where the floor is.

5

Look for a Broken Cable or Spring

If the door closes crooked or jerks, a lift cable or spring may be failing. Don't force it — that can worsen the damage or drop the door.

6

When to Call a Pro

If the sensors won't hold a solid light, the limits won't set, or a cable/spring is involved, we'll fix it fast and safely — call (940) 644-4376.

Troubleshooting FAQ

Why does my garage door close then open back up?

The opener reverses when the safety sensors are misaligned/dirty or the down-limit is set wrong (so it thinks it hit an obstacle). Align and clean the sensors and reset the close limit.

Why won't my garage door close but the light blinks?

A blinking opener light during a close attempt is the safety-sensor signal: they're misaligned, dirty, or blocked. Clean the lenses, clear the path, and realign until both LEDs are solid.

Is it safe to hold the button to force my door closed?

Most openers let you hold the wall button to override the sensors in an emergency, but you should never leave sensors bypassed — they prevent the door closing on a person or pet. Fix the real cause instead.

Why won't my garage door close in cold or bright weather?

Direct sun on a sensor lens can wash out the beam, and cold can stiffen parts so the door binds and reverses. Shade/clean the sensors and check the door's balance and lubrication.
